University requirements and application process
This page outlines the requirements and application process for an institution to participate in the BUILD program. It also underscores the cooperative and open nature of the BUILD program and how schools will share the course materials they develop.
1. REQUIRED COURSES
The Core BUILD classes are required courses for each student: Freshman Foundation Course, Sophomore Cornerstone Course, Junior Keystone Course, Senior Capstone Course.
2. THE FIVE SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A. Submit a Syllabi and Lessons Plan Package (SLPP) and commit to offer these courses on a regular basis for a minimum of five years after any freshman enters the program. The purpose of this commitment is a guarantee to your students that you will remain part of the program through their expected graduation date.
You may use the BUILD SLPP which will automatically be approved. You may also use another institution's approved SLPP which will also be automatically approved if you also use their approved Plan of Action (see POA description below). You may also submit a custom SLPP which will be approved if it meets the program requirements described below. By submitting your SLPP, you agree that it is open and free to use by other institutions and will be included as part of the BUILD program examples.
B. Submit a Plan of Action (POA) that describes how the courses will be incorporated into your existing program. In most cases, this will not increase the graduation requirements of your program. The Core POA, for example, describes a plan to use tailored sections of existing required courses and electives to fulfill the BUILD requirements without altering graduation requirements in any way as implemented by the University of Louisville, Morehead State University and Arizona State University.
You may use the BUILD core POA which will automatically be approved. You may also submit a custom POA which will be approved if it meets the program requirements described below. By submitting your POA, you agree that it is open and free to use by other institutions and will be included as part of the BUILD program examples.
C. Submit a Spend Plan that fulfills the BUILD program requirements as described below including commitment to a negotiated number of BUILD scholarships and commitment to provide labs meeting the BUILD program requirements.
D. Submit an Instruction Plan (IP) that describes how you will train and certify your BUILD instructors. In most cases, this will outline how you are going to train the course instructors (usually your professors) and course mentors (usually local members of industry). In most cases, this will comprise of the course instructors completing the on-line BUILD Instructor Program and the course mentors completing the full in-person immersion BUILD mentor training program for their particular courses.
You may use the BUILD core IP which will automatically be approved. You may also submit a custom IP which will be approved if it meets the program requirements described below. By submitting your IP, you agree that it is open and free to use by other institutions and will be included as part of the BUILD program examples.
E. Pay the BUILD application fee and commit to BUILD program membership for a minimum of five years after any freshman enters the program. The purpose of this commitment is a guarantee to your students that you will remain part of the program through their expected graduation date.
